IVF success

IVF success

When you have a positive pregnancy test result, your medical team will organise a pregnancy ultrasound around two weeks later.

The ultrasound is important as it will confirm the correct location of the pregnancy in the uterus and not in the fallopian tube, which known as an ectopic pregnancy.

Some pregnancies result in miscarriage so confirming the presence of a heartbeat is reassuring. Your doctor will then advise you of the next steps.

It is also known that IVF pregnancies have a slightly higher risk of complications such as:

  • preterm birth

  • placental complications

  • low birth weight, and

  • the rate of caesarean delivery of IVF babies is higher.

These risks are similar for people with infertility issues who become pregnant without IVF.

The most important factor affecting IVF success is the age of the eggs.

The graph below shows the livebirth rate from each IVF cycle for a number of age groups, including people over the age of 40.

It’s important to remember that everyone is different, and your medical team is here to guide you in what your individual chance of success is, so that you can make the right decisions based on your unique circumstances.

Research

Our clinic has been a leader in research since the beginning of IVF, contributing to many of the pioneering advancements in our area of medicine.

We are proud of the research we do as it is through this work that we can shorten the time for our patients to get pregnant.

During your time as a patient with us, you may be offered participation in our research projects.  We will explain the options fully and further consents will apply.
